Engakuji Temple
One of the Five Great Zen Temples in Kamakura. The O-gane (Great Bell) is designated as a national treasure. After visiting the Butsuden, enjoy the views from Ryoan-in (one of the subordinate temples) on the top of the hill, and the beautiful front garden of the Hojo (the chief priest's residence).

Meigetsu-in Temple
Meigetsu-in is known as the 'flower temple'. Make sure to check out the view from the round window of the Main Hall, said to represent the state of enlightenment. The pristine rock garden is a perfect example of the Zen aesthetic.

Tokeiji Temple
Home to the Suigetsu (water moon) Kannon, said to be the most beautiful Kannon statue in Kamakura. This temple was the only Buddhist convent authorized by the shogunate, and was once a refuge for women fleeing their marriages.

Hokokuji Temple
Also known as the Bamboo Temple, it is graced with 2,000 bamboo trees which rise heavenward. In the bamboo garden, only the sound of streams and rustling leaves break the silence.

Jomyoji Temple
One of the Five Great Zen Temples of Kamakura, it is famous for its zen rock garden. At the Kisen-an tea room enjoy drinking matcha tea, accompanied by Japanese sweets.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine
This great shrine was founded by the Kamakura Shogunate was the center of bushido (the 'spirit of the samurai'). Painted in bright vermilion, this shrine is a must-see for visitors to Kamakura.
